Lab 3: Porifera and Cnidaria

ثبت نشده
چکیده

AIMS: This lab will introduce you to the basal metazoan groups: the Porifera (sponges) and the diploblastic Cnidaria (hydroids, jellyfish, anemones, sea pens, corals, and relatives). You will see examples of the important fossil representatives of these groups: demosponges, hexactinellids, and archaeocyaths (Porifera); and the rugose, tabulate, and scleractinian corals (Cnidaria). The method of cladistics, by which we can best produce a hypothesis as to the evolutionary relationships among groups of organisms, is introduced. By the end of this lab you should be able to identify the major poriferan and cnidarian fossil groups, be familiar with the stratigraphic ranges of these taxa, and understand the basic operation of cladistic analyses.

Molecular Evolution The Occurrence of Type S 1 A Serine Proteases in Sponge and

Although serine proteases are found in all kinds of cellular organisms and many viruses, the classic "chymotrypsin family" (Group S1A by the 1998 Barrett nomenclature) has an unusual phylogenetic distribution, being especially common in animals, entirely absent from plants and protists, and rare among fungi. The distribution in Bacteria is largely restricted to the genus Sfreptornyces, although...

Phylogenetic Context and Basal Metazoan Model Systems1

SYNOPSIS. In comparative studies using model organisms, extant taxa are often referred to as basal. The term suggests that such taxa are descendants of lineages that diverged early in the history of some larger taxon. By this usage, the basal metazoans comprise just four phyla (Placozoa, Porifera, Cnidaria, and Ctenophora) and the large clade Bilateria. We advise against this practice because b...

Dendrogramma, New Genus, with Two New Non-Bilaterian Species from the Marine Bathyal of Southeastern Australia (Animalia, Metazoa incertae sedis) – with Similarities to Some Medusoids from the Precambrian Ediacara

A new genus, Dendrogramma, with two new species of multicellular, non-bilaterian, mesogleal animals with some bilateral aspects, D. enigmatica and D. discoides, are described from the south-east Australian bathyal (400 and 1000 metres depth). A new family, Dendrogrammatidae, is established for Dendrogramma. These mushroom-shaped organisms cannot be referred to either of the two phyla Ctenophora...
